Ocean with David Attenborough ||Documentary Review||

I recently watched the documentary "Ocean with David Attenborough". As someone involved in the marine world both professionally and personally, it felt deeply personal. Although I'm trying to remain unbiased, I'll express my honest opinion. We often fail to realize and appreciate the ocean's contributions to our lives. We've reached extraterrestrial objects and ventured into space, but a vast portion of our Earth covered by oceans remains highly unexplored. The enormous potential, power, and wellness the ocean contributes to the Earth and us are highly underappreciated.

I was breathtakingly amazed by the beautiful marine creatures, their food chain, and the harmony within their ecosystems. The documentary beautifully covers corals, sponges and their crucial role in maintaining the ecosystem.

However, it takes a heartbreaking turn halfway through when it shows how bottom trawling destroys entire ecosystems. This unnecessary exploitation of marine organisms erodes the ocean floor. What's even worse is that from trawling, only 25% of the catch is kept, and the remaining 75% of marine life is abandoned to die. In many countries, this practice isn't even illegal, and marine conservationists have noted the barren, dead ocean bottoms in many parts of the world. This not only affects the health of the ocean and its organisms but also contributes to global warming, as these organisms are responsible for carbon sinks.

Illegal fishing methods also impact the lives of coastal people, shattering their livelihoods, food security, and lives due to overfishing. However, when these destructive fishing practices are halted, the marine world starts recovering.

The excessive hunting of whales led to their near-extinction, but when it stopped, they began to appear again. Most importantly, when a small area of the ocean was protected, a large surrounding area got recovered and flourished at a tremendous, almost unbelievable speed.

This documentary makes us aware that a healthy human life is directly dependent on a healthy ocean. We need to protect them, and many countries have now agreed to protect at least 25-30% of the ocean. I believe this is an eye-opening documentary that not only makes you wonder about the marine world but also inspires you to think about how you can contribute towards the goal of making the ocean healthy.
